At the Piano

I love listening to movie soundtracks. In fact, most days that’s what I listen to. Over the past few years, I’ve written arrangements of a few songs I love—very heavy on the Hans Zimmer, my personal fav. Along with some other contemp songs, I’ve put together an album of my arrangements. I’m really excited about this one! Enjoy!

Master, the Tempest is Raging

In March of 2020, the world was overrun by the COVID-19 virus. Schools shut down, the economy tanked, and people stayed home for fear of becoming infected.

Like many, I’ve felt the heaviness of this time. As I went searching for peace, I came across this hymn, and the words sang to me! They are so beautiful.

I hope this arrangement brings you some peace as well!

PIANO SOLO:

VOCAL SOLO performed by Naré Yang Kim:

My Arrangement of Hark! the Herald Angels Sing and What Child is This?

Hey everyone,

I’m still around, working on lots of music. My latest Christmas piano arrangement is a medley of:

Hark! the Herald Angels Sing

What Child is This?

Background

Originally, I wouldn’t have thought these two songs go together. “Hark! the Herald” is upbeat and boisterous, while “What Child is This?” is more quiet and reverent. But halfway through having fun with “Hark!”, I was a bit stumped. I got a bit of writer’s block. So I just started messing around on the piano, stalling, until I came to a slow, reverent version of “What Child is This?” And somehow, it just kinda fit with the rest.

I really love how the two came together and hope you do to. Because, to me, celebrating Christ’s birth at Christmas is both fun, wonderful, and boisterous, and yet also reverent, amazing, and incredible.

The lyrics

Even though this is a piano arrangement, when I put the video together, I wanted to add lyrics. But I’d never realized how amazing the words are to either song until I slowed down to read them word by word.

Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn King!

Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!

Joyful, all ye nations, rise; join the triumph of the skies;

With the angelic host proclaim Christ is born in Bethlehem!

What Child is this Who laid to rest on Mary’s lap is sleeping?

Whom Angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and Angels sing.

Haste, haste, to bring Him laud, the Babe, the Son of Mary.

Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Son of Righteousness!

Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings.

Mild he lays his glory by, born that man no more may die;

Hark! the herald angels sing glory to the newborn King!

Anyway, hope you enjoy this season wherever you are!

Christmas Handbells for Children

Last night, I had my Christmas piano recital, and I left my little handbells out, along with some simple music I put together so the kids could play around. I’m amazed how even the littlest kids can figure out these bells because of the colors. In fact, one little boy (6yo) who is not a piano student yet, and who has not done anything with music, picked up the bells and started playing “Jingle Bells” by himself. They love it!

Several parents have asked about these bells and the music, so I thought I’d share here.

I bought a pair of simple rainbow-colored handbells years ago, like the ones found here. There are 8 bells ranging from C to C, and from red to pink.

And here’s the free music I put together.

Songs are:

  • Jolly Old St. Nicholas
  • Jingle Bells
  • The First Noel
  • Joy to the World
  • Angels We Have Heard on High
  • Away in a Manger/Cradle Song
  • Rudolph, the Red-nosed Reindeer

So if you have kids, try it out. It’s seriously the easiest thing ever, and they love it!

Heart of Red, Blood of Blue

My newest novel is now available! I’m so excited for this one.

This project started years ago with a girl who popped into my mind and didn’t want to leave. Even as I worked on other stories, Gisela was never far away. She was looking for love, acceptance, some humor, and peace for her country—things most of us hope for in one form or another.

Heart of Red 400

Princess Gisela of Steinland was born without color. Albino. To add to this curse, her betrothal to Prince Jerrik of Kronga ends in his death and starts a ten-year-war her father is determined to win, even if it means bringing her out of hiding to do it. Now the savage Krongon war commander, Bloodless Kristoff, seeks the hearts of the entire royal family, especially Gisela’s.

Desperate, her father agrees to another alliance that involves her marrying an old brute of a king. Unwilling to be the sacrificial lamb, Gisela goes on the run. Thrown into the center of a battle between three kingdoms, she finds herself fighting for her life and the right to be truly loved.

Can the girl who started the war find a way to end it?

THE MUSIC (PIANO SOLO ALBUM):

Header 500

As part of this project, I’ve combined my two great passions, music and books. The idea to compose a “soundtrack” for my novel came a while ago, but I credit my daughter with being the one to help me see that not only could I do it, but I should. It’s been a blast. So I’ve written 11 original piano solos to go along with the story. Songs include: “The Betrothal,” “Ryder,” “The Battlefield,” “Vengeance,” “The Village,” “Tranquility,” and more.

I also need to give a quick shout out to five students at BYU. Four of them helped edit this book as part of their English language editing capstone course: Emily, Rachel, Erica, and Ashley. They have been awesome!

Along with them, Alyse Myers, provided the artwork at the beginning of the book. She did such a lovely job of envisioning Gisela!

Why “The Greatest Showman” is the Greatest Show

Today, The Greatest Showman is released for digital download, after spending months with theaters full of avid fans.

It comes out on DVD/Blu-RAY in another few weeks.

Personally, I have seen The Greatest Showman six times in the theater. SIX TIMES! I have never seen a movie even half that many times in the theater. I don’t even go to the movies that often. In fact, it’s an odd year for me to go to more than two in a single year.

But this was so worth it.

I kept finding new people who hadn’t seen it, and I’d take them so I could fall in love with the movie all over again. One time, I took my 19yo daughter back (for the third time) just because she’d missed the opening scene on her second time. And you CAN’T miss the opening scene.

Two weeks ago, my husband and I decided to take the rest of the kids–again–because we’d listened to the soundtrack so many times. We went on a Saturday morning, 11am, almost three months after the release of the movie. So I didn’t think we needed to arrive early to get tickets.

We nearly lost out. We got the last four tickets. We couldn’t even sit together. The person in line after us was out of luck.

Sold out.

Three months after the movie’s release.

On a Saturday morning.

And when the movie finished, the audience clapped.

How many Oscars did this successful, magical, popular film win?

A big fat ZERO.

Which proves what we all know: that Hollywood is clueless.

But the author/composer in me can’t stop analyzing why this movie is such a success. So here are some of the reasons I think it’s a smash hit.

(While pictures are great, they just don’t do this movie justice, so I’ve added some awesome Greatest Showman GIFs.)

Why The Greatest Showman is the greatest show:

The Music

It’s absolutely phenomenal. It moves you–quite literally if you’re prone to dancing. It gets your heart pumping, and makes you smile.

The Story

Following your dreams can lead to big, wonderful things. Outcasts can and should be loved. They can find their place and no longer be seen as odd, but amazing. Even P.T. Barnum isn’t labeled as an outcast in the movie, but technically he started out as one.

The Music

Yes, I’m mentioning the music again. It’s that good.

The performances. The choreography. The integration of the music with the scenes (the hammering, the horses step to the music). I bought the soundtrack before I’d left the theater parking lot the first time. (The “Reach for the Stars” and “The Other Side” scenes are my personal favs.)

The Family Friendliness

I think the biggest part of its success is how family friendly this movie is. It’s PG, and not even a fake PG. It’s actually PG.

Critics can’t figure out how this movie has spread by word of mouth. Honestly, I only saw it in January after several of my friends kept posting about it on Facebook. Otherwise I wouldn’t have gone. As I mentioned before, I’m not a huge movie theater person. Now, I can’t get enough people to go see it. Young. Old. It’s for everyone.

Not only is there no sex, as well as minimal swearing and violence, but families are seen in a positive light. Shocking, right? A dad trying to support his family. A mom trying to support him. Cute kids who contribute to his magical ideas. Struggles, both financial and emotional. While I don’t know a single family involved in a circus, this movie has related to millions of people across the globe.

And it has two very sweet romances. :)

My 10yo son who hates watching movies (especially movies I like) has fallen in love with this movie as much as I have. He was furious this week when I took his grandparents without him (during school). They loved it, too.

No Politics

This is another huge part, I think, of its success. There wasn’t a single bit of politics in the whole thing. No social statements. No agendas. Nothing about destroying the environment or gun violence or crooked politicians. We’re all sick to death of news and politics–or at least I am. Two straight years of ugliness, and this was a desperately-needed breath of fresh air!

A happy ending for everyone. Hallelujah! (I’m looking at you La-La Land.)

This world can use A LOT more happy.

It’s Magical

That’s what it boils down to. The combination of everything makes the story, music, and movie as magical as the circus.

So . . .

If you haven’t seen it, GO SEE IT!

Buy it.

Get the soundtrack.

And fall in love.

Finding Our Unique Purpose

How to Find Your Unique Purpose

If you were a body part, which would you be?

Maybe you would be the:

  • Mouth because you like to talk
  • Foot because you like to move
  • Eye because you like pretty things

Think for a moment, because sometimes we feel boxed, defined, and even trapped by who we are–or who people think we are.

So . . . what do you do?
